Mastering the Art of SOAP Presentations: A Systematic and Concise Approach

I really think the biggest takeaways from presenting SOAP
is using systematic approach when presenting physical exam findings
and then also being concise in your assessment and plan.
Um, when you’re presenting to your preceptor
and just not going on and on for like
10 minutes. When I present these,
I go in that order, chief, complaint, history,
why, why they’re here,
any pertinent medical history
or surgical history that the patient may have.
And then I talk about any significant medications they’re on and use,
any drugs or alcohol or anything like that,
especially when you’re on your surgery rotation,
that’s something that they definitely want to know.
And then when it comes to your assessment
and presenting your physical exam findings,
I go from head to toe. I found that, um,
a lot of my preceptors like that as well,
cause it was just very systematic to do that.
And then for my assessment and plan,
this is where your clinical experience
and having more clinical experience comes in.
Because that was very trial and error, I would say.
