In the Making: A Transparent Look at the Decision-Making Process Behind My Sustainable Fashion Line

I made a video
saying that
natural fibers
are not
always better
and I got this
comment saying
ever since
you’re working
on your own
fashion line
you started
advocating for
polyester and
other synthetics
so people will
not call you out
when you
launch your own
like I see where
they’re coming from
so I feel like
I have to clarify
some things
and I’m gonna
do that by showing
you something I
thought I would
never show you
and this is
the planning
document for
my fashion line
so when I
first started
thinking about
creating a line
I wanted
everything to be
natural fibers
you see here a
coat in 100% wool
a T-shirt in
100% pima cotton
which is a higher
quality of cotton
and I also wanna
fix problems with
my clothes
so I’m not just
creating clothes
for the sake of it
so for example
I’m creating a T-shirt
that’s not sheer
not see through
especially white
and something where
the neckline doesn’t
get stretched out
after a few wears
as I’m going through
the process
I realize that
some things are
not possible with
synthetics
for example I
wanted to create
a trouser in
100% wool
but I also wanted it
to be wrinkle resistant
and machine washable
and through this
process I learned
that’s just not possible
if you’re thinking
I have seen
wool trousers
that are
machine washable
and wrinkle resistant
well I learned
it’s because
they have
plastic polymer
coatings on them
they don’t have
to disclose that
on the tag
so looks like
you’re buying a
100% natural
fiber trouser
but actually it’s
coated in plastics
so I’m left to choose
do I wanna create
line that’s only
for people who can
afford dry cleaning
or do I wanna
create a line that’s
accessible and functional
for everybody
so ultimately I
decided I was open
to using synthetics
because when
I think about the
pants I wear
the most often
they’re the ones
that are easy care
and I really want
this line to be
clothes that you
can wear a lot
and even with
the packaging
I was highly
against plastic
do you see here
we’re planning to
use tissue paper
we’re using brown
untreated cardboard
because it’s
easier to recycle
and with a bag mailer
the easiest and
cheapest is plastic
but I wanted
to find a
biodegradable option
each time I want
to do something
sustainable
my team is
telling me that
is cutting into
my margins
and is cutting
into my profits
but I really
don’t care
I just wanna
do this right
and I wanna make
it as sustainable
as possible
so I really hope
that this help
clarify my intentions
for this line
I’m not doing this
as a cash grab
I am truly doing
this because
I see a hole
in the market
something that I
wish existed
my goal is truly
to create clothes
that solve fashion
problems on
a daily basis
and it’s also
gonna be as
sustainable
as possible
and I really
appreciate all the
trust you had in me
and all the support
you’ve given
me so far
and I hope you
continue to do
so until the brand
is launched
