The Wisdom of Suffering: Insights on Intelligence and Growth from Dostoevsky

here’s how you know somebody’s intelligent
and this is a simple moral maxim about intelligence from the Russian author
Dostoevsky, where he basically says
the greater the suffering
the greater the intelligence
or in his precise words: pain and suffering are always inevitable
for a large intelligence and a deep heart
and what he meant is that pain is a great teacher
it forces you to grow, it changes you
in fact wisdom is simply the realization that we all suffer
and that therefore pain is what unites us
for it makes us realize that we are not alone
hence why Dostoevsky said that the greatest of men
must also suffer the greatest sadness
the more you are challenged
the more you will rise the more you will overcome
the greater the suffering
the greater the intelligence
