Lefty Legend: Larry Bird’s Unforgettable Game Against the Blazers

Larry Bird got so tired of dominating the NBA,
he played a game lefty. And what happened next is crazy.
So it’s Valentine’s Day, 1986.
The Celtics are just a few months away from completing their threepeat,
and Larry Bird is about to win the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award
for the third year in a row.
Now, that night,
bird had a game against the Portland Trail Blazers and Clyde Drexler.
But Larry wanted to find a new way to challenge himself,
because the NBA was just too easy.
The day before this,
he just had a 31 point triple double against Seattle.
So before this Portland game,
Larry decides he’s going to play it lefty.
He told his teammates, the media,
and then he went out there and actually did it.
That night, Larry had a 47 point triple double.
And in the highlights from this game,
you can see Larry tried to use his left hand as much as possible.
He used his right hand for this shot to send the game.
It’s overtime, as well as the game winner in overtime.
But he had no choice. Defenders were on his left side,
and he wanted to win. Now,
when the game was over, reporters ran up to Larry and asked him,
why did he do this? And his response was,
he wanted to save his right hand for the Lakers.
Two days later, he went to LA and beat magic.
