There’s a debate going on right now
about whether or not black myth Wukong is a soulslike,
and it’s super weird
because it’s a very objectively and very clearly not one.
I’m enjoying it, but no matter what they say, it’s.
It’s a bit of a souls like.
It just is. Like,
I know they’ve tried to say that it isn’t,
but just about every mechanic that makes a souls like
a souls like is in here.
No mechanics that make a souls like a souls like are in this game.
First up,
this game is lacking the primary mechanic that makes a souls like
a souls like, and that is the souls feel.
The mechanic where you collect a bunch of XP or souls on your journey,
and if you die,
you drop them all with the opportunity to recollect them,
but if you die a second time,
you lose them for good. That’s not in this game.
You could argue that that is the only mechanic that constitutes a game
of being a soulslike, but if we really want to deep dive into it,
let’s go through some other mechanics as well.
Soulslikes are also known for their parry systems,
of which this game just doesn’t have.
There is a Perry spell you get later into the game,
but it’s on a cooldown and like
hardly constitutes as like a quote unquote Perry mechanic.
Um, there’s also no blocking in this game,
which is wild. It’s all dodging
The classic souls like control scheme also isn’t in this game.
Instead of using R1 and R2 to attack,
use square and triangle. The only thing in this game
that’s even close to being a souls like mechanic
is the lock on system and the stamina bar.
But Bayonetta has got a lock on system,
Skyrim has a stamina bar, and both of those games have bosses,
so I don’t know why that’s making people say that this is a souls like.
By every definition it is not a souls like.
Combat is a really fast, you can kind of just flail around at bosses.
You don’t really need to like learn them.
I think people just see semi hard game and are like yep,
that’s a souls like that. This is a classic souls like.
